Case Study Title: Aflp analysis of Moringa oleifera varieties fron Northern Nigeria
Focus Theme:
Geographic Region:
Habitat Type:
Taxonomic Group:

Scope

The realization of the economic as well as sociocultural contributuion of Moringa oleifera to most tropical african communities makes the foundation of this work. It is only when varieties potentials are mapped out most especially through the present approach of molecular analysis like Aflp that breeding work can be mapped out. Therefore, my aim is to characterize this important plant from different provenances from Northwestern Nigeria with a view of identifying the different varieties there present. The work is part of my PhD degree programme. Presently, AFLP equipment is lacking in my institution and its environs thus, the need for me reach out for collaboration.

Purpose

The work is towards the realisation of a terminal degree for my progress as University lecturer.

Background

Naturalisation of M oleifera which is a native of India plus its accompanying benefits support this kind of study to further realise its other benefitial attributes. At present no breeding work on this plant has been undertaken in Africa (Bosch, 2004) except the available ones from India targetted on improved vegetable fruit pod production. However, in Africa our target is towards improved foliar production.

Logistics

Seeds already collected from the zone and now awaits analysis whenever the chance arises.
