Case Study Title: DNA barcoding of food
Focus Theme:
Geographic Region:
Habitat Type:
Taxonomic Group:
Project Duration:10/2007 to 10/2008

Scope

I would like to explore whether I can apply DNA barcoding to commonly found food stuff in the supermarket.
The first category will be sausages.  We have been eating lots of sausages which do not label their source of meat clearly.  hence I would like to see whether I can use the simple DNA barcoding to identify whether I am eating sausages containing meat from kangaroo and/or rat.
Has anyone tried to identify a piece of unknown meat with this method?

Purpose

This promised study is for consumer protection.  We all eat sausages.

Background

I just want to use an easy and simple method to find out what I am having for dinner.

Logistics

I will collect different brands of sausages from my supermarket.  I will perform the DNA barcoding as I am a molecular biologist.  Then I will compare the posted data on websites on different vertebrate species.
